Alvernia was surprised to know that her daughter had cracked the secret that she has suffocated for years. She found it so hard to come up with a way of discrediting the facts Gail is bringing to her. Gail is telling her mother that she found her birth certificate stating that she was listed as “colored”. Alvera was unsettled with the truth she knew, and tried to divert the truth once more and said, “I don’t know about the birth certificate you have, but mine says I’m white!” Of course Gail did not buy her lies anymore.

She mentioned the census records, which included her grandfather, Azemar, and in shock, Alvera could not believe what she saw. Silence quickly filled the room, and she decided that it was time to let it out. She shamefully whispered something Gail would never forget.
