It turns out that Alvera’s weird makeup disguise had nothing to do with what she staged as a problem with the sun and obsession with gloves and the hat. Alvera was hiding her true identity and pretended to be white her entire life. She further revealed that Gail’s grandfather was an African-American. To be with the right man of her dreams, she had to squander the fact that she was mixed race, but was that the full story?
