You wouldn’t expect to see a newspaper at a supermarket since paper routes were the most popular form of distribution. During the early 1900s, when print newspapers were at their peak in Western countries, this was often a young person’s first work, either taken on before or after school. To be clear, this is a far cry from the newsboy or newspaper hawker, a formerly common sight in Western countries, who would push newspapers to pedestrians, typically in a loud voice. As many as 50 newspapers competed in New York City alone during the era of several daily editions.
