In the 1950s, as the Cold War heated up, the specter of a Soviet nuclear assault loomed large over American society. In exercises intended to keep them safe in the event of an atomic attack, students were taught to “duck and cover” by crawling beneath their desks and keeping away from windows. Government bunkers were built into hillsides and municipal buildings as emergency shelters. People began storing up on catastrophe supplies as a way of coping with the fear that their town will be next.
