Despite how hopeful the U.S. Navy is about its SSN(X) program, sailors will not be entering one of these subs for many years to come. The actual program will only commence in 2031, and it is expected that the manufacturing of these submarines will begin in 2034. From that point onward, only two submarines in that class are expected to be acquired per year. Given that the Laika submarine is already being developed by the Russian Navy, one may wonder if the SSN(X) will not be released too late. Why is the SSN(X) program taking so long?

While there is much effort going into the development of the SSN(X) program, the U.S. Navy is incredibly interested in developing and identifying the cutting-edge technologies that could be potentially installed into this new class of submarine. Then there are the U.S. Navy’s rivals who are incredibly interested in this program too, and would love to have a front-row seat to the SSN(X) program’s progression. They might be shocked to see how much it costs to create a new kind of submarine, however.
