Uncovering The Grayback
Taylor believed that he had a good chance of identifying Grayback’s wreckage in the near future. And, to their amazement, the Lost 52 Project crew was successful in locating the elusive submarine — thanks to the efforts of a dedicated researcher. Despite the passage of time, the submarine’s hull was nearly fully intact after several decades of service. Divers and researchers, on the other hand, experienced a range of emotions as a result of this finding.
Emotional Roller Coaster
In an interview with The New York Times following the discovery, Taylor said they were elated. However, the circumstances were also depressing since they had only discovered 80 men. Furthermore, there were those who considered this finding to be a watershed moment in their lives. They were the relatives of the submariners who had sacrificed their lives on the Grayback during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Their parents, wives, children and other loved ones had been anticipating for answers for what seemed like an eternity.
