While not as serious in tone as many of the other sci-fi epics of its time (or as successful in the box office), Starship Troopers was still a massively entertaining and shocking cinematic experience that had some deep themes beyond all the giant bug splattering carnage. Johnny Rico – Casper Van Dien
We have to start this list with the hero of the movie, of course, with Casper Van Dien, who played the hunky Johnny Rico. He was brave, he was brawny, and most of all, he killed a lot of evil bugs. Rico’s appeal was his traditional, all-American personality and good looks, as well as his fearless fighting skills. It’s almost like Paul Verhoeven, the film’s director, was trying to parody the stereotypical American action movie hero. That’s not to say that Rico was not a lovable character on his own!
