Pot Calling The Kettle Black

When someone is being hypocritical, it is often a case of the “pot calling the kettle black”, which is an expression that is used when someone accuses another of doing something that they themselves are guilty of. For example, someone that smokes cigarettes scolding someone that has just started on the dangers of smoking would be guilty of the pot calling the kettle black. We’ve all been guilty of this at least once, and it helps to be a bit more self-aware!

It Doesn’t Amount To A Hill of Beans

Those that adore the classic romance drama film Casablanca might recognize this expression. In the climax of the film, Humphrey Bogart’s character says to Ingrid Bergman’s, during their emotional goodbye, “Ilsa, I’m no good at being noble, but it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.” What he means is that they are inconsequential on the larger scale of things, and the expression refers to something or an insignificant person.
