Carrying on with his digging efforts, Mike discovered another link, bringing the total to three. This was clearly part of a bigger system, and for a split second he wondered if what he had found maybe something illegal. He had come this far and wasn’t about to give up on learning what it was, so he carried on digging.

There can be no contradiction that this was a very peculiar object. The iron links kept showing themselves as Mike kept digging, and from his perspective, they simply carried on and on to no end. As he unraveled more and more links, he realized that they ran even deeper into the soil. What exactly were they attached to in the first place?
