As we’ve seen with other countries, Cold War paranoia was real, and many decided to pre-empt a global nuclear war by constructing their own underground structures to offset the potential risks of a global catastrophe. Albania is a country known for building a collection of bunkers in its major cities under the communist Hoxha regime, which lasted from 1944 to the mid-1980’s. You’d be mistaken to believe that they only built a handful of underground bunkers. In fact, the total number is closer to 500 000, or 2.2 bunkers per square mile across big cities.
