California In The United States
In early 1862, a massive storm raged on in California, and Sacramento Valley was essentially turned into a 300 mile long inland sea overnight. In the aftermath of the destruction, it was decided that buildings needed to be raised in order to stop the same tragedy from ever occurring again. This meant that the original city, now dubbed the Old Sacramento Underground, was buried forever and built over. What makes this particular attraction interesting is that it wasn’t built underground on purpose, rather in response to a natural disaster. Predominantly sealed, there are still some areas that are opened to tourists, forming a crucial aspect of the region’s history to this day.
