Being such a bountiful ancient depot of valuable minerals, it is surprising that the mining operations there only commenced in the 1960s. Iron ore was and continues to be the driving force of this mining industry, with almost six million tons having been extracted in the area. In 2014, only 5% of Australia’s total iron ore was sourced outside of Pilbara!
