There were comfortable beds and cushions like we have now back in the early days, and people had to make do with what they have. They had to get resourceful and used one product to serve multiple purposes. Unlike now, cement nor wood was prevalent or being used, but still, no one like the fact that they had to sleep on the dirt. So, they came up with a plan.

Straws were the best option they could work with, and so they did. The straws were used as a protective method for the home as it reduced the chances of people contracting a cold from the wet ground. They also used it for bedding, where they would stack multiple layers and only replace the top layer once in a while. After all, washing and bathing were not done often, so why should the bed be changed?
