Why Moats Existed
We often see moats outside of castles that reminds us of the fairytale life we always dream about. However, in early times, moats were used as a protective barrier for the castle against those who wanted to invade. But, after you learn this truth, you will never see them as romantic again or even want to go near one of them. Moats in those days were the public sewer for the castle.
Why Moats Existed
No one would want to swim in the waters to get to the castle when they learn it is the sewer main. Also, other persons used it as a dump where they would throw unwanted food scraps and other debris. That must have been a terrible place to be, especially where the smell is concerned.
