The early Romans had the weirdest and most unethical forms of hygiene practices, and though they were resourceful, we are glad a lot of those traditions are no more. But to think the ones we know are bad, there is more that will blow your minds out of this world. During their existence, they thought it would be great to upgrade from urine as a mouth wash and started using a newly created “toothpaste” made of mouse brains and sodium bicarbonate.

We’ll understand the sodium bicarbonate as a base for making toothpaste, as many manufacturers of nowadays add it to their product. But, it is the mouse brains we don’t understand, and if it has any benefits, we will never know. Romans were just too creative when it came to hygenic matters. The only we would like to ask is – what was going through the mind of the person who came up with this idea?

Romans had some weird thinkers who brought their ideas to fruition. Of course, they had an obsession with where hygiene was concerned, but their methods are questionable when you think about it. We understand their thinking and inventions are what inspired many of the hygenic practices today but, of course, with different products. We know they used urine as a mouthwash, but was that the only thing? No, it wasn’t!

The early Romans also used urine as a source of detergent for washing their clothes. They sighted the stain removing elements as the reason for their choice. But where would they get enough fluid for washing? They usually store a large community container where people would go to ease themselves. It would then be collected and taken to where the bulk washing would be done. Geez…the smell must have been awful!
