Pale Skin was the Norm
If you weren’t white back in the day, you would not be considered as a part of the aristocrats and beautiful. Being pale (as you see on a lot of the historical photos) was the best way of showing where you stand in society and your socio-economic status. Being pale meant, you didn’t come in contact with the sun and was too busy for any actions as such and went for both men and women.
In earlier centuries, people used white makeup to get their skin paler (some people do it today as well) though the makeup had a lot of lead. As time passed, people started understanding the dangers of this product and what the chemical could do to the skin after a while. The lead would seep through the pores of their skin and cause different outbreaks but was overlooked as they didn’t know what was causing it. They would continue to use the chemical, which eventually led to lead poisoning.
Urine was the Mouthwash and Stain Remover
Some of these hygienic practices are pretty weird and, for the most part, disgusting! Urine was not to be left out and served many purposes around the home in the early days and coming down through history. There was a time it was used to trigger and source electricity and also used as a stain remover because of the ammonia it contained.
However, it went overboard when people developed the trend of using it as a mouthwash and teeth whitener. They had the perception that it improved their oral health, including their teeth (because of the stain removing benefit). Urine was also used as a tanning product for leather.
