Dolled Up For Grocery Shopping
Pants and t-shirts may be okay now, but a trip to the grocery store in the past required getting all dolled up! In the South, particularly in smaller communities, you’re certain to run into somebody you know at the grocery store. A one-on-one run-in with a familiar face is quite uncommon. If you’re lucky, you’ll get seven or eight. At the freezer section, you’ll encounter Karen from church. Jim, who works in the produce section, will say hi to you. Your high school best buddy Sallyanne will be manning the meat counter when you arrive. Looking well is important if you’re planning on meeting everyone and their sister. Southern cities are no exception to the rule when it comes to this kind of thing.

Curls Out
For the ordinary housewife of the preceding generation, doing all of their chores before supper was a challenge. It was common for women to go shopping in their curls so they could do both at the same time. When it came to everyday chores at home, women wore dresses, skirts or dress slacks to work. Before the late 1960s, there were no curlers that could be used in a matter of minutes, such as irons or rollers. Foam rollers or a trip to the salon were the preferred methods of relaxation for women. Some women in the 1950s may have cheated on their husbands’ grooming standards by taking them to the train station in a bathrobe or curlers since they had the flexibility to do so.
