These days, chain stores allow their employees to wear more casual outfits than in the past. Although they are unquestionably more comfortable, they were dressed in a more formal manner around the middle of the twentieth century. They weren’t the only ones to do so, either. The first grocery store company that introduced uniforms other than the traditional apron as part of its employee training program was the Piggly Wiggly. Piggly Wiggly female workers wore a black dress with a white frilly apron in the 1960s, which was part of their uniform.
