He was on the edge of breaking down, momentarily hanging his head in the comfort of his hands. As he did that motion, the din ended in a violently jarring instant, only further elevating the terror that Christopher was feeling to alarming levels. His head snapped in every direction scanning for potential threats before cranking up to the mine’s roof. There he saw his old rusty friends hovering above him.

The crumbling chains had come back into his perception, swaying in an almost choreographed way, as if they were alive. It was almost hypnotic how these inanimate objects seemed so full of purpose, like metallic snakes trying to shed their flaking skin. Christopher was completely captivated, to the point that the incoming rush of water, despite growing louder, went on completely unnoticed. If Christopher had noticed, his mind was elsewhere.
