Unsullied Beauty
Elizabeth, also called the “Virgin Queen”, would find her answers in the pasty, pale makeup with which she coated her skin rigorously. She would later become even more strongly dedicated to painting herself ghost white as a means of maintaining her looks and authority with age. Many people of the time (and the present) became invested in finding out what lay beneath all that whiteness, and the answers that they uncovered were nothing short of shocking.

The Young Ruler
Elizabeth assumed the throne very young, at the tender age of 25. This meant that she would have to “brand” herself appropriately as the Queen of England. Six years prior to this momentous event, Mary, Elizabeth’s half-sister, sat the throne in a historical first as the initial Queen of England. Things did not change much in the patriarchal court, however, especially during the crown’s passing. Elizabeth might have been queen, but she had a sea of domineering men to contend with.
