Morgan Island, South Carolina
The island of Morgan, located in South Carolina, is sometimes referred to as “Monkey Island” due to the presence of four thousand rhesus monkeys on the island. The monkeys are not indigenous to the area; rather, they were transported over from Puerto Rico when an epidemic of herpes virus B occurred here. Morgan Island is now closed to the public for both security reasons and for the welfare of the island’s monkey species.
