The Vatican’s Archives

Although the Vatican is often considered to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, there is one section of the building that is strictly off-limits to the vast majority of visitors. The Apostolic Archive of the Vatican was created in 1612 with the purpose of serving as a repository for the private documents of the popes and the Catholic Church. At one time, the archives were strictly off-limits to the public. Since 1881, only a restricted number of researchers who had previously been approved were allowed access to the archives.

Plymouth, Montserrat

Plymouth was a town on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, where its residents lived in relative tranquility until 1995. In the same year, the volcano in the Soufrière Hills became active, which resulted in the complete evacuation of the town. Half of the island is still off-limits as an exclusion zone because of the imminent eruption, which turned the town into an ash-covered wasteland.
