Ancient Epiphany
There were indeed crabs in the prehistoric era that were alive 95 million years in the past. Mark recalled learning about this species’ extinction as a youngster. Who knew that such information would become so wildly relevant one day?

He also recalled, more relevantly, the ancient crabs’ odd features. He looked at the creature before him and noted its enormous bulk, large eyes without sockets, folded claws, and limb-like mouth. His heart began racing. He felt a mixture of primal fear and scientific fascination.

More trivia came to mind. It was in 2019 that American scientists found a prehistoric specimen’s fossil that looked like a crab. Callichimaera perplexa was the name for this species, which means “perplexing beautiful chimera”. You can imagine why it was named thus, due to the incredible coloring and disturbing but fascinating overall appearance.

Had Mark and his pal really stumbled upon a species once believed extinct? He was no scientist, but he felt that he had to be sure. He steadied his breath, extended his arm, and hoisted the creature by its back.
