But on February 2, 2011, the pair confessed that their recording and performance were both coming to an end. There wasn’t anything too dramatic that shut the band down, but Meg’s diminished passion was one of the big contributors to The White Stripe’s finality. You would think that hard rockers Rage Against The Machine could handle a prank from one of their own members, right? Wrong – the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards turned out to be the worst setting for a prank from Tim Commerford, the group’s bassist. To be fair, this was quite the outlandish stunt, where Commerford decided to accept the Best Rock Video award on the band’s behalf, even though Limp Bizkit had won. Zach de la Rocha, frontman of the band, then departed after nine successful years. The award show scandal seemed to be the final nail in the coffin.
