The Moment Noemi Could Not Forget
After some time, the pup began to move more steadily. It limped at first, then took a few stronger steps. The adult wolf stayed close, guiding it away from the water and toward the grassy dunes beyond the beach. The wildlife team arrived shortly afterward and watched from a distance. They did not want to frighten the animals unless they needed medical help immediately. The pup was tired but alert. That was a good sign. Noemi stood near the rescue worker, wrapped in a borrowed jacket, her shoes soaked and her hands scratched from the rocks. She barely noticed. Her eyes were fixed on the wolves. The adult wolf paused at the edge of the dunes. Then it turned back.
For a few seconds, the wolf looked directly at Noemi again. There was no way to know what the animal understood. Maybe it was only checking the beach before leaving. Maybe it was making sure the humans stayed away. Or maybe, in some quiet way, it recognized what had just happened. Noemi did not need an explanation. The wolf turned and disappeared into the dunes with the pup close behind. Only then did Noemi realize she had been holding her breath.The beach felt different now.
