Cultural appropriation is a no-go these days, and when Jamie Oliver prepared a Jamaican-inspired dish he was accused of this without even realizing what he was doing. Trying to showcase his love for Caribbean food, he launched a product called Punchy Jerk Rice. Clearly, not of Jamaican descent, and with little knowledge of the culture, a lot of people spoke out about his inauthenticity on social media.
If you’ll believe it, Dawn Butler, a British MP, even weighed in on the incident. Her parents were from Jamaica, and she didn’t mince her words in describing Jamie’s actions as “cultural theft”. Even the person who taught him how to make Jerk Chicken spoke out in dissatisfaction. Never a dull moment in the life of a TV chef.
