Despite the fact that the Grayback and her strong crew of 80 men had been missing for decades, it would be more than half a century before anybody could find out exactly what had happened. Initially, according to the United States Navy, she was believed to have sunk beneath the waves roughly 100 miles southeast of Okinawa, Japan, when she went missing.
