Skilled And High-Caliber Crew
The three submarines were successful in destroying 38,000 tons of Japanese ships and the damaging of another 3,300 tons of Japanese ships. On November 10, 1943, the three returned to Midway Atoll after exhausting their torpedoes. Using wolfpack tactics on 2 October, Grayback moved in on a convoy that had previously been assaulted by Shad, and sank a 9,000-ton cargo that was sinking from two Shad torpedoes. On the 10th of November, the submarines returned to Midway, having used up all of their torpedoes. John Anderson Moore would become the second Grayback skipper to receive a Navy Cross following the accomplishment of this operation.
