A Force To Recon With
With John Anderson Moore as her new commander, the USS Grayback arrived at Pearl Harbor on September 12th, 1943, to begin her eighth combat patrol. The Grayback, USS Shad, and USS Cero went to Midway Island on September 26 and formed a “wolfpack” of three ships. Captain Charles B. “Swede” Momsen of Cero commanded the three subs. Despite the fact that the U.S. Navy was the first to use this strategy, the German U-boats had had great success with it in the past. The new strategy worked, as well.
