A seasoned veteran, the USS R-12 had spent more than 30 years serving in the United States Navy when it was retired from active duty in 1932 to become part of the reserve fleet. As a result of the looming threat of war, the Navy ordered her to be recalled to active duty in July of 1940. She spent a large amount of time traversing the Panama Canal — until a tragic event occurred in 1943.
