During the four-day period that Grayback approached the coast of Saipan, the boat was involved in an intensive game of cat and mouse with the enemy submarine. As a result, while the Grayback was not damaged by the torpedoes, she was prevented from moving to a firing position in order to counterattack when the opponent launched two torpedoes directly at the ship. With her first score, though, she would land an immediate damage to the enemy vessel.
Defeating The Enemy
In fact, it was an oil tanker with a tonnage of 3,291 tons that was the Grayback’s first victim. Despite taking the rare and perilous step of searching the surface during the day, Grayback’s second patrol mission encountered a shortage of potential targets. It was on the 22nd of June that she landed at Fremantle, Western Australia. Her home port for the most of the remainder of her tenure in service would be this Western Australian port. And she didn’t waste a single second of that precious opportunity.
