Early Demise
The Grayback was a Tambor-class vessel, and it was one of just 12 of its kind built. Tambor submarines were eventually phased out of combat duty in 1945, after seven of them were destroyed during the war. It goes without saying that The Grayback was one of the many submarines that did not make it to the conclusion of the war. But that doesn’t rule out the possibility that she was a force to be reckoned with.
High-End Vessel
When underwater, she displaced 2,410 tons and measured little more than 300 feet (91 meters) from stem to stern. Her greatest surface speed was around 20 knots at her widest point, which was somewhat more than 27 feet (8.23 meters). When traveling at a slower speed, the submarine could remain below for up to 48 hours, while her range reached about 12,500 nautical miles (23,150 kilometers). Moreover, she possessed significant offensive capability.
