If The Creek Don’t Rise

The term “if the creek don’t rise” refers to a person’s assurance that they will get something done or stick to agreed terms or plans, provided that some unforeseen trouble or event does not make such promises impossible to fulfill. For example, someone might say that they will go fishing with their friends, provided that “the creek don’t rise”. While we all want to do our best when it comes to plans and services, mother nature and misfortune, in general, have a funny way of presenting unmanageable obstacles in our way.

While this is a relatively harmless term that Southerners use to call northerners today, the term “Yankee” was a bitter and even hateful one that originated during the American Civil War that lasted between 1861 to 1865 that was used for Union members of the northern states. This was a ferociously brutal and bloody civil war where the Northern and Southern states battled over the future of slavery within the United States. Thankfully, relations between “Yankees” and Southerners have improved.
