A Strong Advantage
The fact that each soldier had more than one horse at their disposal meant that if one perished, the other could replace it right away. This meant that Khan’s warriors were always able to bounce back quickly after the battle, often even using multiple horses in order to overpower their competitors. Because Khan considered all animals to be a sign of wealth, anybody who couldn’t maintain multiple horses was not allowed closer to his inner circle.
Knowing When To Back Away
Although film depictions of Khan’s dominance will often show hordes of horsemen charging at their opponents, in reality, their strategy was all about knowing when it was best to retreat. His army had to be equipped to retreat no matter the conditions and terrain they were dealing with. This strategy helped win them a lot of battles, especially as they could strike again relatively quickly even if they lost a few men in the process.
