Those great builders and city planners involved aimed to provide the 550,000 Parisian citizens with a clean drinkable water source. Bonaparte also wanted his people to thrive past the many health issues that the city was plagued with. As you well know, when a population does not have a clean source of water, then terrible infections like dysentery and cholera run wild, as was the case in Paris. The Canal Saint-Martin was then constructed so extensively that it snaked throughout Paris for around three miles’ worth of access. Beyond providing fresh and clean water, this canal also allowed the delivery of building materials and food.
