The last meal that Jesus Christ shared with his disciples is a major event in Christianity. It is then clear why Renaissance painters were so enthused to painting the scene. Da Vinci was one artist that enjoyed painting men with androgynous looks, meaning that the viewer might wonder whether a certain figure was supposed to be female, or not.
