Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One in Doctor Strange
The Ancient One appeared in films like The Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and was always seen as an Asian character. However, Hollywood decided to be a part of the whitewashing experience, and the actress picked out for this role made a step-back on the decision. After conducting a little research, the Ancient One is more like a title given to a character instead of it being an individual role. Tilda Swinton, who was given the role, noted the description of the character fit more for a Celtic woman instead of being portrayed as an Asian man.
The controversy surrounding the character’s true description was revealed when Swinton played a role in the film. However, there was a little problem as the film went from cinema to cinema…the cast was not the best! Many people found it weird for an Asian role to be played by a non-Asian and thought the role was stolen and given to a popular Hollywood star.
Gary Oldman as Rolfe in Tiptoes
Gary Oldman’s role in Tiptoes, a 2003 film, had loads of people wondering what was going through the minds of the production team, especially the casting team. The movie features the likes of dwarfs – Peter Dinklage was a favorite – so we know it will fascinate the dwarf community. However, there was a major problem with the cast as seeing the film featured dwarfism, a fully-grown man played the lead role. This decision had lots of eyebrows raising in confusion.
The movie is focused on the rights and of the little people, and seeing they had the lead role given to someone who is not a part of “their world” makes it really weird. The films were very much welcomed, and a lot of people had nothing too good to say about it. Because of this, the film didn’t receive as much as they had hoped and it only made it as far as to DVD sales.
