Maxi Pads
Although the military dubbed them “sanitary napkins”, Maxi Pads as we know them have come a long way since and have changed the way women around the world cope with their monthly menstrual cycles. In 1920, a pioneer called Kimberly Clark launched Kotex Maxi pads with leftover stock bought directly from the military. This stock had initially been planned to be used elsewhere, but the project did not end up panning out. That one decision led to a historical moment for the women’s movement.

Fertilizer (Ammonium Nitrate)
Modern day nitrate fertilizers were actually created first to be used in… the military? You’re not reading wrong, but you also don’t have to worry about a potential bomb in your garden shed. Today, ammonium nitrate is used to create the handy bags that are used to store fertilizer in homes around the country. The substance is not used in the amounts that the military used it, so there is only a very small chance that you might destroy your green lawn in the process of tending to it.
