A Hidden Door Changed Everything

The police captain ordered the team to search every surface. Officers checked the walls, the floor, and the corners of the room, looking for anything unusual. At first, everything sounded solid. Then one officer stepped near the back corner, and his boot made a hollow sound against the concrete.

He knelt down and brushed away loose dirt that had been scattered across the floor. Beneath it was a heavy iron ring set flat into the concrete. When he pulled it, a hidden trap door lifted open, revealing a steep staircase leading down into darkness. Cold air rose from below. The building had not been doorless after all. Its real entrance and exit had been hidden underground.
