Woodstock’s Wonderful Women – Photographs of Unrestrained Femininity

Frozen in Time

Many of Woodstock’s attendees enjoyed a once in a lifetime experience. This blonde surfer-looking lady seemed joyfully oblivious to the fact that she was one her way to being one of history’s most iconic photographs. Such a photo is a picture of freedom. The girl’s stunningly wavy hair is loose and she’s strolling about without a worry in the world, about to enter a whole new level of festival (and liberated) experience.

Festivals make for some of the most thrilling escapes from your worries and stresses. Places such as Afrika Burn, Coachella, and Download Festival set whole new trends in the cultural world every year.

Abandon Ship

Woodstock was sadly hit with a severe level of rainfall, turning the venue into something of a muddy swamp that plenty of people fell into. The small streams in the area filled up to the size of small lakes, where attendees jumped in to clean themselves off! It appears like this particularly harrowed-looking lady suffered more rain than she could stand, having packed her bags and looking around miserably for the next bus.

Trash Talk

Woodstock ’69, at its heart, was meant to be about spreading compassion and peace between its guests. Incredibly, this heartfelt mission even employed trash! With thousands of attendees milling about the place, there was bound to be a small ocean of rubbish left behind after the last show. That is why so many people committed to the spirit of Woodstock voluntarily remained to tidy up the place – albeit in the hippiest way imaginable. They arranged the trash in the shape of a massive peace sign which was easily captured by nearby hovering news helicopters.

So, what exactly is “Woodstock”? This was the town where the festival was supposed to run, until arrangements hit rocky shores due to an ablutions dispute. Woodstock’s organizers were repelled by the condition of the portaloos which failed to satisfy the health and safety requirements. This meant that they need to start all over again in a place called Bethal, less than thirty days before the historical festival’s opening! As everyone knows, the event was still a resounding success, with waves of excited folk flocking to the site donning the latest fashion trends.

Born From Greatness

One of Woodstock’s headliners happened to be Melanie Safka, whose sensational performance was recorded while she electrified the thousands of fans present. Incredibly, Safka was so moved by Woodstock and her time there that it was the motivation for one of the star’s best tracks, ‘Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)’. The bracketed part of the song refers to the sea of lighters the singer watched while the deluge continued.

Unrestrained Magic

Despite the Beatles being one of that era’s most acclaimed bands, the 1969 lineup didn’t feature the iconic group. As rumored, John Lennon stated that his US visa application had been refused and the late icon missed his chance. Then there were allegations made against Yoko Ono, Lennon’s infamous wife, who apparently halted him from attending due to her Visa being barred! Although the earthshattering draw of the Beatles was missing, Woodstock secured a humongous statewide attendance and a weekend which defined a generation.

Making A Statement

Plenty of people enjoy expressing their individuality and rebelliousness through their hair choices. Looking at this lady, it is clear that Woodstock’s hairier moments were a big draw. This was just a single example of the many hair-raising appearances spotted at the festival. Initially, Woodstock’s founders were under the impression that about 200,000 folks were headed for their grounds. As it turned out, the full attendance numbered at around 500,000 super eager attendees.

Living In The Moment

Woodstock ’69 was a rare instance where hundreds of thousands of people came together to revel without a single fight or controversy. This was a place where countless individuals were united by their commitment to peace and benevolence. One particular woman seemed to be appreciating the whole spirit and atmosphere for a lifetime of amazing memories. Her flares are bound to be burned into many people’s memories, too!

Plenty of youngsters are under the impression that Coachella was the founding place of the floral headband festival staple. Older revelers, however, will happily remind us all that the hippy era brought the green fashion trend into being. The pictured couple must have been one of the founders of this look, considering how pleased with themselves they seem. Woodstock may have attracted a collection of that period’s most renowned musical acts, but plenty of its attendees were completely oblivious to the performances, focusing on the “vibes” and crowds present instead.

Rewriting The Book

As revealed later during the many tales which came out of Woodstock, the majority of attendee who managed to arrive at the festival amazingly should not have set foot inside the place to begin with! Festival organizers were assured that they would be able to limit the crowds to a figure close to 200,000, selling tickets to each person at $7 an entry. As mentioned before, the actual swarm of festival-goers swelled to a far higher level when the fencing placed around the event was flattened by stampeding invaders who were simply allowed to pass free of charge.

Part Of The Scene

The counterculture of the 60s is renowned for its fashion movements. Headbands and free-flowing locks became a staple, as this young free spirit proudly displayed. Another massive trend was self-sufficiency and arts and crafts. Plenty of Woodstock attendees were committed to raising their own makeshift shelters and decorating them with creative works of art. Close to the venue was a lengthy line of abandoned cars whose owners had abandoned them to live freely for a couple of days!

We Will Rock You

Woodstock was lucky to have Grace Slick as part of their musical lineup. The singer and songwriter brought her band along too, called Jefferson Airplane. This moment was captured not long prior to their dazzling stage debut. It appeared like this performance would redefine humanity in general, at least until everything fell to pieces. Woodstock featured a potentially ingenious system where a two-sided stage could revolve to keep band rotation running smoothly and uninterrupted. As bad luck would have it, the machinery ground to a halt while supporting such heavy loads of people and equipment.

Reveling Out Of Time

Some examples of joy are enough to inspire anyone to pursue their happiness. This photograph is the picture of serenity, where a woman without a worry in the world relaxes while anticipating the next rousing act. She would soon be joined by some interesting guests, however, as the farmer whose land had been used to host the titanic event had failed to herd his cows when the stampede of invading revelers broke down the fences, allowing the unlikely mooing guests to roam free among the partiers.

The English group, The Incredible String Band, was another acclaimed musical feature of Woodstock ’69. The band’s singer and songwriter Christina McKechnie, who was better recognized as “Licorice”, would later become involved in an odd controversy. Following a 1986 trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, Licorice embarked on an adventure through the United States. The sweet singer was never spotted again following a spotting in 1987 where someone witnessed her in the Arizona desert trying to hitch a ride to who knows where. The Incredible String Band are under the impression that her body lies somewhere in the wild.

Fierce Female

This young and in charge woman seems deep in contemplation, or did something incredible catch her eye? She could even be troubled, however, as while Woodstock was a completely peaceful event, it did suffer from a shortage of food. Timeless Events

With the pioneering and sensational nature of Woodstock, it comes as no surprise if it became a media storm with widespread press attention. Plenty of journalists dedicated a sleepless coverage to the vibrant happenings. As one can imagine, photographers and cameramen were treated to all manner of incredible moments. Despite plenty of well-wishers attempting to reimagine Woodstock since its inception, this was a unique moment in human history. 1999 saw a Woodstock imitation event which fell to such embarrassing pieces that the whole mission has been laid to rest.

Live A Little

Attendees were so committed to enjoying the shows that they were happy to remain crammed and shoulder to shoulder with countless other fans vying for proximity to the stage. Incredibly, most of Woodstock’s population didn’t even get the chance to watch the performances, instead of dedicating their energies to their own fun. One could have taken part in DIY seamstress work, or danced along to spontaneous bursts of music alongside guests playing guitar and other instruments. This was, for a short while, a questionably functioning society!

Money Matters

Plenty of the attendees were completely devoted to exhilaration and recreation, oblivious to the fact that the event runners had struggled to convince musicians to attend Woodstock to begin with. As revealed later, plenty of bands requested immediate payments before getting up on stage, doubtful that they would see a penny otherwise. Some artists saw Woodstock as a large risk, doubtful that it would be successful, requesting a “double bubble” for their commitments. A particularly committed organizer splurged the entirety of his trust fund trying to back the event. Such poorly handled financing resulted in the organizers facing a debt of millions of dollars.

Please Don’t Stop The Music

Woodstock was the type of experience that was all gas and no brakes. Although many of the attendees were barred from enjoying the music of Woodstock, there were plenty who are treated to some of the most inspiring auditory experiences of modern times. The bands would continue thriving on stage long beyond their official playtimes, many gigs lasting well into the morning. Despite Woodstock not having been planned reasonably, this was one unforgettable experience.

Party Reinforcements

Woodstock’s organizers were somewhat overwhelmed by the floods of attendees to the point where they struggled to find food for the hundreds of thousands of mouths pouring in. You wouldn’t expect that the U.S. Military would ride in to save the day, but it wasn’t for their choppers flying in medical and food supplies, the half a million guests may have been reduced to savagery! Of course, when the attendees saw the military approaching, they were convinced that they were coming to shut the place down.

Tour Of The Place

The scattered crowds were once more reunited now that meals were being handed out on large trays. Officials and volunteers alike made sure that everyone had enough provisions and that everyone remained nourished enough to make it through the weekend. Pictured here we have some women who may have been on the hunt for a snack, or the stage, depending on what they were hungering for. Woodstock, as you can see, was one diverse fashion mecca!

Law and Order

Woodstock was not like modern festivals where “glamping” is the preferred way for attendees to luxuriously make it through the few days out in nature. Woodstock, on the other hand, offered very little shelter for its guests, so this poor cold looking girl was one of many shivering revelers. The cold was one factor, but so was security, but luckily the accommodating The Hog Farm provided a band of “peacekeepers” called the “Please Force.” The captain of this motley crew would happily throw a pie in your face spray soda at it if you broke the rules!

Showstopper

When the heavens broke open and the deluge commenced, there seemed to be no end in sight to the soaking showers. By the time Monday dawned, only a portion of dedicated attendees had remained. This foul weather was fierce enough to reduce the 500,000 strong population to just 25,000 people, whose resilience would be rewarded with one timeless performance by a young guitarist… Jimi Hendrix! His rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” being the most famous performance of the entire shebang.

Pick Me Up!

Now, before you wonder where this girl’s parents are, you must remember that this was the time of rebellion and counterculture in America, where women, once confined to and defined by outdated patriarchal standards. This lady was one of the first in American society to be so free and bold. Of course, she needed to sell some flowers to cover the $ 18-weekend attendance. We’re quite sure that some kind souls pulled over to buy her wares and her time at Woodstock was nothing short of phenomenal.

Don’t Stop Me Now

Woodstock was only about peace and love, but it was also a complete escape from the world and a lot of society’s rules and standards. People were able to completely let go for just a while, dancing, singing, and doing whatever they felt like. The pictured beauty is having the time of her life here, grooving to some psychedelic music and freeing her mind of all negativity. It’s really quite an envious scene, especially during these isolated times!

The Floral Queen

While the banjo player’s eyes are mere slits at this stage of Woodstock’s enjoyment, it does seem like he is transfixed with the gorgeous flower queen in front of him. Despite the woman’s beauty, there seems to be something mysterious about her expression. We wonder what was going on through her mind during this phenomenal experience. Woodstock was all about profound experiences, and plenty of incredible friendships were formed. Many people even found love and other special kinds of relationships, too.

Psychedelic Siesta

With all the thrills and chills of Woodstock, it comes as no surprise if people would rather have danced and partied rather than sleep. This was, after all, a very rarely enjoyed and short-lived dream come true for so many people. Still, people did need to take it easy every now and then, like how this cute Woodstock fairy is with a rather mischievous expression. No matter how much fun you are having at a festival, it is important to rest and recuperate.

A Star Is Born

As mentioned before, there were plenty of attendees performing throughout Woodstock. This is a common sight at any music festival, where inspired musicians and singers will entertain small groups of people, free of charge. You don’t need to be Jimmy Hendrix to play in public, as the lady pictured in this scene knows full well. We would love to have attended her performance and wonder whether her career took off or not. Either way, people like her really added to the wonderful atmosphere of Woodstock’s free and energetic activities.

Owning Your Look

Have you ever wondered where festivalgoers like those seen at Coachella and Burning got their inspiration from for their creative and out there looks? Looking at the pictured individual you could probably guess that Woodstock continues to be a massive source of inspiration for free-spirited festival fanatics. The sequins radiating from this beautiful woman’s large and incredible eyes make for a powerful vision. You’ve probably seen plenty of women wearing those large sunhats at many festivals, too.

Weathering The Storm

Although the crazy rain was the downfall of so many Woodstock attendees, the weather was actually unforgivingly hot before the storm came. Ironically, plenty of festivalgoers were spotted performing rain dances in the hopes that the weather would turn in their favor. They should have been careful with what they wished for, as when their prayers were answered, the forces that be, did not hold back. Still, there were plenty of weather warriors like the one pictured who bravely clung on to their convictions and dedication to the spirit of Woodstock.

Delicate Little Flower

It’s no surprise that hippies are crazy about flowers, just like the joyful girl in this photo holding a daisy. All the flower crowns made for Woodstock weren’t brought in by the truckload, however, as Woodstock’s fields were bustling with daisies. This flower made such an impression on attendees that it ended up becoming the global peace symbol with hippies across the world. As far as relationships go, the couple pictured here are the perfect example. Young, beautiful and euphoric.

Wild, Woolly Woodstock

There are plenty of hippie fashion elements that have filtered through into modern fashion, as you well know. However, there are some looks that thankfully remained in the 60s. While we will never criticize someone for expressing their individuality, this hairdo is a bit too out there for our taste. Still, it does have a fierce and free energy to it, which we must give her credit for. In fact, this is one of the rare examples where such a getup actually looks rather… interesting!

Can We Help You?

Being a hippy is all about activism and fighting “The Man,” but it is also about meditating and appreciating nature, which is what these two ladies seem to be doing excellently. Moments of serenity like these are difficult to find in our modern hectic lifestyles, which is why we need to take after this pair. At the time that Woodstock was happening, the world was deep into the Cold War and its widespread conflicts, meaning that this festival was a rare island of peace.

We’re All Connected

You might think of hippies as dropouts from society who could care less about what happens in the world they abandoned. This photograph shows otherwise, as it’s clear that the pair here grabbing a copy of the Evening Standard (something you wouldn’t expect to find at Woodstock, either) were invested in world news. In a world as volatile as the one in the mid-20th century, where any crazy new development could occur, it comes as no surprise if even Woodstock attendees wanted to keep abreast of the news.

A Bubbly Personality

You might not have blown bubbles since you were a child, but this was the sort of activity which hippies adored. You must remember that Woodstock took place more than fifty years ago, before anything even close to the electronic wonderlands of events like Tomorrowland had come to be. Speaking of bubbles, the original Woodstock venue is currently held within historic site preservation, and in 2017 it was added into the National Register of the Historic Places.

Drawn Together

Woodstock was a pioneering moment in American history for many reasons, diversity and inclusivity being one of them. This was one of the first moments when people of so many backgrounds and walks of life lovingly came together. There was no racism, sexism, ageism or any kind of animosity or prejudice. It’s sad that in today’s acrimonious political climate that everything Woodstock tried to foster in Americans is scarily starting to fade away.

Quest of the Century

With hundreds of thousands of people racing to get to Woodstock, the connected roads and highways become clogged up for an estimated twenty miles’ worth of vehicles! The attached Woodstock town’s actual population couldn’t leave their garages and driveways as their streets were so packed with festivalgoers. Thankfully, through the power of public transportation, congestion was eased when busses began commuting back and forth, collecting and delivering stranded visitors.

Bringing The Kids Along

Woodstock may be stereotyped as an adults-only kind of event, but there plenty of parents who brought their children along too. These two moms here are clearly having the time of their lives with their kids, who probably also reveled in the open fields of Woodstock. We hope that they didn’t get into too much trouble, however, as they do look like a very naughty bunch of rascals!

Janis Joplin Stayed

Janis Joplin graced Woodstock, earning $7,500 for her set. While “Piece of My Heart” is a standout memory from her performance, she also delivered other soulful tunes on the second day. The band arrived by helicopter, and she encouraged them to approach the show like any other gig. After the performance, she stayed to soak in the festival’s atmosphere with fellow attendees.

No Age Restriction

Discrimination was unequivocally absent at the iconic Woodstock event. The inclusive nature of the gathering welcomed individuals of all races, genders, and ages, fostering an environment of unity and acceptance. Parents embraced the spirit of the festival by bringing their children along, creating a sense of shared joy and togetherness. Among the crowd, a particularly enthusiastic little one stood out, radiating pure excitement. The heartwarming sight of children not only attending but also witnessing life’s miracles unfold as some babies were even born at the festival itself, added an element of awe and wonder to the unforgettable Woodstock experience.

Time For Chow

Although upon reflecting on the Woodstock event, many individuals come to the realization that there is room for improvement in their fashion sense, the predominant lesson we gleaned was the remarkable inclusivity and sense of community that permeated the concert. The gathering of 400,000 attendees necessitated sustenance, and they came together in a spirit of cooperation to share meals and support each other.

Fortune tellers seemed to have quite a presence at Woodstock, blending in with the hippie vibe in their colorful, trippy attire. Monkey Business

The security measures at Woodstock were surprisingly relaxed, allowing attendees to bring in a wide array of items, including an unexpected guest – an adorable pet monkey. Managing a crowd of around half a million individuals proved to be quite challenging, paving the way for all sorts of unexpected and groovy shenanigans. One can only imagine the variety of other animals that might have been sneaked in amidst the lively chaos of the event.

Fashion Forward

During the 1960s, fashion held significant importance as individuals sought to showcase their personalities through clothing. This era marked a period where fashion trends symbolized a newfound sense of liberation and self-expression. Women embraced the style of tight, bell-bottom jeans paired with charming crop tops, embodying a fashion-forward look. Not limited to women, men also embraced casual attire during this time, reflecting the spirit of freedom and individuality. Woodstock emerged as a cultural hub where people gathered to freely express themselves through unique and unconventional fashion choices, further emphasizing the era’s emphasis on personal style and creativity.
