Saskatchewan in Canada
Canada plays host to an interesting historical tale in the form of the Tunnels of Moose Jaw, which are located in the Saskatchewan region. Built-in 1908 with the intention of having a space for people to live in case they were forced underground, the tunnels were initially occupied by Chinese immigrants, who were subjected to racially discriminatory policies at the time. As times started to change, the tunnels found a new purpose – assisting underground smuggling operations to and from the United States. While the tunnels might not have the rosiest of histories, it remains a popular tourist destination, reminding visitors of a particular time in Canadian history.
