Lalibela is an ancient underground city that was first built all the way back in 1187. Intended to be a second Jerusalem by the Christian king Lalibela, the visionary behind the construction, it contains more than ten interconnected churches that have been carved into the rocks. As you can imagine, this makes it a popular tourist destination and a tremendously spiritual experience for Christians from all over the world. This Ethiopian gem is located about 600km from the city capital and is affectionately dubbed the Machu Picchu of the country.
