Dedication To Triumphs

Retrieving the needed samples was something of a herculean effort. Firstly, the mission headed by Thompson needed more than two dozen kinds of clearances from numerous Tanzanian bodies. Then, once the team had been cleared, there was still the slog of hailing their equipment up thousands of feet to the sample zone. This was a quest that employed almost one hundred porters.

Finally, the team was able to begin drilling holes to scoop out the necessary ice cores which could be measured at 30 to 170 feet long. After a couple of years’ worth of backbreaking dedication, the core collection was finally finished. Thompson, along with his fellow researchers, released a paper analyzing the information which they had gained from studying the ice samples called, “Kilimanjaro Ice Core Records: Evidence of Holocene Climate Change in Tropical Africa.”
