Cattle herds in the United States numbered 68.4 million in 1940, the lowest point in the cycle. In 1945, that number had risen to 85.6 million cattle due to a spike in demand during the war. Back then, a half gallon of dairy milk cost 25 cents. The current price per half gallon is $1.62. With inflation, the meager 25 cents have grown to a whopping $4.64. Oat milk and cashew milk, on the other hand, would have been unheard of in the 1940s.

Butter

During the war years of the 1940s, rationing was a feature of everyday life on the American Home Front. Butter, oils, and fats were rationed with fuel, sugar, coffee, processed and canned goods, meat, and cheese. Housewives also gathered kitchen waste fats to assist in the production of glycerin, which was required by the military. The delectable fat is now priced at around $1.92 per pound. Butter cost 36 cents per pound when it was first introduced in 1940. With inflation taken into account, it amounts to $6.66 in 2020!
