Before going into details about the discovery, let us meet the man who owns the ranch. His name is Juan De Dios Sota, and he operates his ranch close to Buenos Aires. It was an ordinary day as the cows were out grazing in the fields amidst a terrible drought that was plaguing the country. Despite the miserable circumstances, Juan’s animals were doing well. But with the current weather conditions of the day, the hunt for water was a dire one. So, when the rancher found this rock, he knew something was out of place, and he had to do a little research.

Those who have been around cows for some time can tell you that their need for water is a high priority. They will search and hunt around for the perfect place where they can get some clear water to quench their thirst. When there is little water available, stampedes can easily erupt to get to a water source. But, even though they were not doing that at the time, they still had a route of their own. As it turned out, they went off to an unusual spot that no one could have then expected.

As the cows wandered, some went into various unusual locations as they needed water desperately badly. Their journey stopped at the Valimanca river beds as they would normally find water in this wetland. However, it turned out that the drought was more severe than they thought, and as such, the water levels were extremely low. The riverbeds bordered the ranch, and so Juan made a little chase after them. While Juan was in his tracks, he had to make a sudden stop. What made him do so seemed to be a real issue that he had to address immediately.

Juan knew everything that went on with his ranch, and he also knew the position of all his lands. Seeing as he had been raising cows for the longest while, he thought he knew everything there was to learn about the farm. As the drought worsened, a lot of things started to unravel before his eyes as they related to the land. The animals were busy moving around, but Juan was somehow trying to overlook the whole issue and he didn’t think the rock he had stumbled upon was any different from the others. But his life and world were about to change completely.

Juan was in the process of leading the cows away from the riverbed when his foot tripped on a stone. The riverbed had never been this low before, and even the stones lying at the bottom of the riverbed started to show up clearly. As Juan got up and started dusting himself off, he stopped to take a look at the stone that had tripped him. Certainly, it looked pretty weird from where he stood. It was one of the most intriguing things he had ever seen. This was what gave him the urge to look deeper into what it truly was.

As he drew closer to it, it seemed like the piece he was seeing was only the tip of something bigger lying below. Also, its shape was rather unique and certainly not something that he had seen before. It seemed to be more than just a rock from where he was standing, and so he decided to contact the authorities. It seemed like an important feature, and Juan’s eagerness to find out more through an investigation was peaking.

As he started to clear other objects from around the strange rock, he noticed a shape that started to form. The photo shown here is similar to a 2015 discovery. It turned out that the rock had an unfamiliar and yet striking shape that you will soon see as you read on. The strange thing was far into the ground, too. Juan believed that if it were a normal rock, it wouldn’t have as much of a pattern as it did. Besides, it didn’t seem like an ordinary object as it was too huge. Well, we think that it’s time to find out more about this strange object.

The rock shown here is similar to the one Juan found. This photo was taken from a 2015 discovery of a similar rock found by another person. It was a similar rock but bigger this time around. The strange rock had a “honeycomb-like pattern” on the outer surface. It was completely different from every other rock that was in the area. After all, Juan was aware of just about everything that was on the compound, so when he saw this strange thing, it came as a surprise for him.

The police came in to find out what Juan had found on the site, and they were in complete shock. But with no form of training to handle fossils and historical discoveries, they had to leave it and get other specialists. If it were some old munition or something of a similar nature, it would have been their call. So they had no other choice but to agree with the rancher and sum up that it was a fossil. They didn’t know what it was, really, but the team that could help them was just a few minutes away.

Juan and the police got in touch with a team from a closeby University, the Institute of Archaeological and Paleontological Research of the Pampean Quaternary (INCUAPA), and they sent out a group of paleontologists and archaeologists to help. The school operates under the National University in Argentina as a scientific organization. As they started their digging, they came across a discovery they have never yet seen in their entire lives. It was classified as an extraordinary find.

A Similar Find
In 2015, archaeologists discovered a similar rock in a different part of Argentina. This time, it was measured to be about three feet long. The one found in this ranch had similar patterns, but they were positioned differently. Also, this time, it was quite larger than the first find. To top the whole thing off, there was more to this formation than what they were looking at on the surface of the ground. The discovery of 2015 didn’t get an intense review like the one newly discovered on Juan’s ranch.

A Team of Fishermen
Back in 2019, a team of fishermen found a rock similar to Juan’s at the bottom of a river. Interestingly, it was also in Argentina but in a different part of the country. It was much smaller than the one found this time around, but it sported the same features and patterns. It was just a little bigger than a fragment, but researchers still took the time to review and assess it. Going on the research that the team had done before, they were able to understand what the origin of the discovery was easily. But, what was the fossil, and what could it be linked to?

The discovery the fishermen made was around three feet, but it had a slightly different shape than the one on Juan’s ranch. As the scientists made their investigations, they finally came to a conclusion. They released details that the fishermen had found an egg while the discovery on Juan’s ranch was an adult. Whichever way you looked at them, the fossils belonged to a prehistoric creature called a glyptodon. It sounds incredible, but what exactly is it?

You might have thought that this creature, the glyptodon, is related to turtles or tortoises, but this is not the case as they are in no way connected. However, they do share similar features, such as the shell that they sport on their backs. Interestingly, glyptodons can pull in their feet under their shells as tortoises do, but unfortunately, they cannot pull in their heads completely. Another intriguing fact about these creatures is that they were not amphibians or lizards, either. So, what exactly were they?

Glyptodons are creatures that existed in South America years ago. It would be a huge error to refer to them as tortoises as they sported features of prehistoric armadillos. They had enormous shells with lots of scales and large claws. Some other kinds had spiky tails similar to a mace. The creatures could easily pass for the size of a small car. But the one Juan found brought a lot of fascination for the scientists.

As the researchers continued their digging, they started to unveil something of major interest. There were not only one but four of the shells on Juan’s ranch. This was a major discovery because findings of its kind in the past didn’t yield much, mostly providing just one sample. But this time around, they managed to find four! Interestingly, all four fossils were of different sizes and prompted the scientists to wonder if it was a complete family they had discovered. However, the strange features and findings kept on coming.

There were interesting features on these newly discovered fossils that allowed them to stand out from the others they had found before. All four this time were facing the same direction – westward. This was an indication they must have died at the same time. Their proximity also gave the scientists added information that indicated they were either a group of hunters or a family. Aside from finding out all there is to know about the fossils, the team was also tasked with the reality of figuring out which genus they came from. All because of our fore-parents and those long before, the animals probably became the first to go into extinction. So, why did humans hunt them so much?

Glyptodons were hunted for a lot of reasons by humans. First off, their shell is pretty huge, and as such, humans wanted them as a form of shelter. It is also believed by many that people who lived in those days lived in caves. So, there might not have been a lot of caves in existence, and seeing the shells could hold around 2 to 3 people, it was quite useful. Interestingly, there were also other reasons why they hunted them.

Humans living in those early days had a lot of dangerous predators, and so they needed a form of protection. Thus, they had to find a way to keep themselves and those around them safe. The spiked mace of the glyptodon tails made a great weapon, especially for hunters. They used the bones as tools seeing they were heavy and strong. Also, managing to hunt and capture a glyptodon gave you lots of credits seeing how big and powerful they were. So, if you ask us, they served humans a lot of purposes in those days.

The fossils discovered in Argentina were considered to be very important. One of the archaeologists on the team, Pablo Messineo, noted that the discovery of the four animals (who seemingly died together), would clear the way for extensive research to be carried out. In the process, they would highlight new details not yet known to anyone. To ensure they were on the right track with their investigations, they carried out DNA testing on the samples. So, what was their next move?

The shells were pretty heavy, weighing about 1000 lbs each. That means they were huge and needed to be handled with extra care. The researchers were truly amazed by this feature. One of the field paleontologists, Ricardo Bonini, said discovering the animals in a group who had died together in just about the same circumstances would present them with a lot of information they have been searching for, for years. Bonini also noted they would get the opportunity to conduct the necessary tests they want to conclude their research.

They had never in their lives discovered an entire family of this nature, so this would spike their discovery interest. In past times, no one could tell whether they were dealing with a male or female animal or probably both. Of course, this would be a great deal for the researchers seeing they could get all this information from one discovery. But, where did they take the fossils?

The fossils were removed from the original discovery site and taken to Cine Avenida, where a special paleontology station is located. Once they have gotten all the specimens they need from the fossils for their investigations, they would open the doors for the public to visit and view them. Realistically speaking…it is a huge discovery and one worth a lot of history. If you ask us, everyone would want to get a first-hand look at animal shells that were practically as big as a VW Beetle.
