Funny Medicine
It was by revisiting the ancient Greek academics’ Four Humors theory that Elizabethan doctors modeled their medicine. Such classical physicians believed that our bodies consist of phlegm, yellow bile, blood, and black bile. This ridiculous system was all the rage in Britain during the 16th century. That being said, such a hypothesis did inspire the doctors when it came to helping Elizabeth and other smallpox victims. What could they possibly have found that gave them good ideas?

Color-Coded Remedies
The strangest part about treating someone using the Four Humors system is that one must use color-coded treatments for an ailment. For example, Given that Elizabeth had red lesions on her body from smallpox, she was shrouded with a cloth of the same color. The doctors then hoped that this would cure them. We must also credit Lady Mary Sidney, who was the queen’s tireless servant. She was always at the royal woman’s side, supplying tea and water whenever necessary.
