Diego Garcia, Indian Ocean
There were once 2,000 people living on the island of Diego Garcia, which is now located in the middle of the Indian Ocean. However, in 1973, the British government forcibly removed all of the island’s inhabitants so that the United States could construct a military base there during the height of the Cold War. To this day, only members of the armed forces are permitted to visit that location.
