One of the most significant locations for Shintoism is the Grand Shrine of Ise, which can be found in Japan. It was built about the third century to pay homage to Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun and the cosmos, but according to custom, it is torn down and rebuilt every 20 years in order to adhere to the Shinto beliefs of death and rebirth. Members of the Japanese royal family are the only people who are permitted to enter the building.
