The creature was initially as still as Mark, but it soon poked out an enormous claw that looked like it could do serious damage if wielded with murderous intent.

The thing moved erratically and unpredictably, like some kind of malfunctioning robot. Mark seemed more childishly curious than cautious, as he decided that finding a stick was the best way forward. Once he found one suitably thick and long, he began prodding the creature. Its claw widened.

The huge claw seized the stick and cracked it in two without effort. Mark immediately crawled back. The last thing that he wanted was to have his fingers snapped off.

As for Dave, he cleared the path with an Olympic leap, both men’s eyes the size of saucers. The unwise prodding did yield the results that they wanted, however, as the two adventurers had lured the creature out, and they could now have a good look at it. Mark expressed his disbelief as an ancient memory came to mind. He grabbed his phone – he had to confirm his suspicions.
