The official reasons for his quitting were penned as exhaustion, but his bandmates were well aware of his substance abuse problems. The band had already been deep in its disagreements that were worsened by demanding touring and divergent musical interests. Mick Jones, the band’s guitarist, was also letting the side down with his behavior. The Clash would ultimately split up after four years.
